About Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient system of health and wellness that’s been used in China for thousands of years, and is gaining in popularity in many Western countries.

Its basic concept is that a vital force of life, called Qi, flows along pathways in the body called meridians. In this belief, disease and illness can occur if the flow of Qi along these meridians is blocked or unbalanced. This imbalance is most commonly thought to be caused by an alteration in the opposite and complementary forces that make up the Qi, called Yin and Yang.

TCM believes that humans are microcosms of the larger surrounding universe, and are interconnected with nature and subject to its forces. Balance between health and disease is a key concept. TCM treatment seeks to restore this balance through treatment specific to the individual. It is believed that to regain balance, you must achieve the balance between the internal body organs and the external elements of earth, fire, water, wood, and metal.

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses a number of treatment options based on the patient diagnosis to restore Qi and the Yin-Yang balance. This may include a combination of herbal medicine and treatment modalities, such as acupuncture, moxibustion (a form of heat therapy), cupping (suction therapy), Gua Sha (a scraping technique), and Tui Na (a therapeutic form of massage).
